Oh Baby Sushi

My love for vegan sushi knows no bounds. It started during quick lunch trips to Whole Foods between long hours of work – simple California rolls, with avocado and soy sauce. Six rolls – prettily packed and making for a light yet solid lunch. Little did I know that my palate was in for so much more in the world of vegan sushi.

While the real love affair started at Shizen Sushi in San Francisco (that I highly, highly recommend), Oh Baby Sushi is a less popular hidden gem that I can equally vouch for (and closer to home, located in Redwood City).

Unlike Shizen, Oh Baby Sushi has an extensive non-vegan menu as well. Their menu distinctly classifies regular sushi, vegan sushi and vegetarian sushi, so it’s super easy to skim through to the section you want to order from.

My top 4 (I couldn’t pick just 3!) in the vegan section were:

Veggie Tiger: Filled with pumpkin and asparagus, the crunchy walnuts on top made this my real favorite.

Cucumber Avocado Crunch: I was apprehensive about this one because I thought it would be too simple, but I was very wrong.

Secret Love: Bean curd, asparagus, and avocado – there was no going wrong here.

Veggie Bomb: I’m typically not a fan of having the whole roll deep fried, but I made an exception with the Veggie Bomb – it had just the right amount of spice, and the bean curd gave it a creamy texture.

My friends who tried the vegetarian ones absolutely loved the Spicy Veggie Roll and the Veggie on Fire. The Veggie Taco is also a great and unique option.

Definitely make sure you get a reservation in if you’re going on a Friday or Saturday night, and head there with a big appetite so you can try as many delicious rolls as possible! I’ve been wanting to make vegan sushi at home for the longest time, and I’m positive I’ll start by trying to replicate one of these rolls from Oh Baby Sushi!
